Sasquad hikes are selected for their uniqueness, solitude, and honoring local folklore. If you are looking for the most popular hikes, there are plenty of other websites that can help with that. We are looking for the trails less traveled. If you have ideas about hikes that should be on the page, let us know! If your hike is featured, we will send you free merch.

Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge

Description
______________
This whole refuge is on our list. We love the history and it provides 15 miles of 20-small hikes ranging from .08 miles to 2.59. Multiple trails can be put together for longer loops, but the variety and length of hikes makes this refuge a great place for kids and accessible to different abilities and modalities. Hikers will see migratory birds, wetlands, oak-pine forest, and shrublands. The refuge is also home loads of wildlife.
This land was traditionally hunted and fished by Nipmuc Tribes, then it was farmed by colonists, before it became a military training annex known as Fort Devens. We love this history because in 2000, the U.S. Army transferred over 2,000 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which established the refuge. This is a great example of rehabilitation of natural areas. Read more.
